Dr. Gurol, a vascular neurologist and researcher at Massachusetts General Hospital and Harvard Medical School, is an international expert on cerebral small vessel diseases of the elderly such as cerebral amyloid angiopathy, conditions that increase the risk of both hemorrhagic and ischemic cerebral events in affected individuals. He uses advanced neuroimaging techniques to clarify the molecular mechanisms of these microangiopathies and develop methods to stratify hemorrhagic risk. He published over 100 peer-reviewed research articles in high impact neuroscience journals as well as many invited review papers and book chapters. Dr. Gurol’s clinical focus is stroke prevention in the high-risk patient, i.e. patients with a hemorrhage prone cerebral small vessel disease as well as concomitant high embolic risk such as atrial fibrillation. Dr. Gurol manages atrial fibrillation patients using cutting-edge risk stratification techniques and shared-decision making approaches to ensure that the patient’s opinions and values are fully taken into account when deciding between life-long anticoagulation versus implantation of left atrial appendage closure devices that eliminate the need for long-term anticoagulant use.
