Dr. Aida Abu-Baker is a research Assistant in McGill University’s Department of Neurology and Neurosurgery at Montreal Neurological Institute and Hospital (MNI). She obtained her PhD in Molecular Biology on DNA damage and repair from University of Ulster at Northern Ireland, United Kingdom in 2000. Dr. Abu-Baker has been working with Dr. Guy Rouleau since 2000. The laboratory focuses on identifying the genes causing brain and nervous system diseases and studying the underlying mechanisms of molecular pathogenesis in order to find new treatments. Dr. Abu-Baker goals are directed towards developing therapeutic strategies to treat trinucleotide repeat disorders particularly oculopharyngeal muscular dystrophy (OPMD), Machado-Joseph Disease (MJD) and Huntington’s disease (HD). She works on gene-based therapeutic approaches to treat genetic diseases using antisense oligonuculeotides and Crispr/Cas9 system. Beyond her research experience, Dr. Abu-Baker is also part-time professor at Biology Department at Concordia University, where she teaches molecular biology and genetics.
